Benedictine Senior Bowlers
A mini-documentary on a unique subculture.
Class: Consumer Culture (2014)
For our Consumer Culture class, we were given the task of finding a unique subculture (a group of people with their own unique structure, activities, shared interests, etc.) and find out as much as we could about them. I wanted to step out of my usual interests and decided to dive into the world of bowling. This lead me to following the members of the Benedictine Senior League at AMF Sunset Lanes. This video was the result of three to four weeks of observation. Every Thursday I would wake up and drive to Sunset Lanes to join this group and watch their games. I ended up seeing a close bond amongst them, and a love for one another that extended simply beyond bowling. Instead, it was the chance for them to get away from their worries and take some time to enjoy life.
Not only did I have a wonderful time working on this video, but it was also the first time my professor, Caley Cantrell, had given anyone an A+ on this assignment. I ended up presenting my film to the Brandcenter's Board of Directors in November.
This video gave me the chance to look at people, and considered their emotions and hopes and lives, focusing on something far greater than advertising alone, which made it a really refreshing and memorable project for me.
The film was shot using both a Sony digital video camera and, due to some techical difficulties, my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. All edits were done within Final Cut Pro X. All filming and editing were done by myself.
